As we are all aware the summer Olympics are happening in Rio. Being an observer of human behaviour, there is one thing that stands out to me time and time again; the mindset of an Olympic champion versus an Olympic contender. It was something I wrote about in this blog during the winter Olympics too.
It fully came to my attention in the men’s fencing competition, when Team GB member Richard Kruse came in fourth place. Many will think this is a great result when competing in the Olympics, however it is not what is expected of a true champion.
Here is why…
A champion competes to win; always! They train hard. They fully believe they can win, or better still they have such certainty about their abilities, they know they will win!
Richard Kruse wanted to achieve his best ever result and he did; congratulations. Coming fourth at the Olympics was his best result. But just think for moment and consider what if he had gone to Rio 2016 with laser like focus to win gold and anything else was just not good enough? Perhaps this certainty would have seen him on the medal podium as proof of all his hard work, rather than just having a minor mention on a Wikipedia page and a nice story to tell the grandchildren.
Do not get me wrong, I am not tarnishing what he has achieved. I am merely looking at this as someone who has studied the mindset of champions who are successful and have made an impact in the world, and I did not see the same level of commited mindset in Richard.
Your subconscious mind works for and against you. When you tell it you want to achieve your best ever result, the driver is merely to do that. However should you consistently tell it that you want gold or at the very least a medal, it will work with you to provide you with that ruthless determination.
You either go to the Olympics to win gold, or you go to make up the numbers. If you have the talent, then this is the only time that delusion can be beneficial, we only have to remember Leicester City winning the Premiership Title to see that.
If you make it to your own Olympics and get into the final stretch then it can be anybodies game. You just have to want it more than the other competitors and have the fortitude to be totally certain of success.
